Canada Energy Regulator approves Trans Mountain toll settlement

The Canada Energy Regulator has approved a settlement between Trans Mountain Corp. and the companies that pay to transport oil through the pipeline connecting Alberta to British Columbia. A commission from the regulator determined that the agreed-upon tolls are “just and reasonable.”

As part of the settlement, Trans Mountain is now permitted to contract up to 90 per cent of the pipeline’s capacity to shippers, an increase from the previous 80 per cent limit. The settlement follows 18 months of negotiations between the federal Crown corporation and its shippers.

The 1,180-kilometre pipeline runs from Edmonton to a marine terminal in Burnaby, B.C., where crude oil is loaded onto tankers for transport across the Pacific. Following a capacity expansion that began in 2024, the company intends to further increase capacity to 1.19 million barrels per day by late 2028.
