Canada environmental groups oppose Build Canada Strong Act

Environmental advocacy groups in Canada are opposing the Build Canada Strong Act, a legislative package aimed at accelerating major infrastructure projects. Critics, including Climate Action Network Canada and National Climate Ottawa, argue the bill seeks to dismantle environmental and labour protections to prioritize megaprojects such as the West Coast pipeline and Roberts Bank megaport.

The proposed legislation would amend several laws, including the Impact Assessment Act, the Canada Energy Regulator Act, and the Species at Risk Act. Key provisions include allowing the Cabinet to designate “regions of national interest” for fast-tracked projects and imposing a strict one-year timeline for major project approvals.

Opponents warn that these changes could undermine federal responsibility for project reviews, limit meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities—which is a constitutional requirement—and increase the risk of ecological damage. Advocates suggest that reducing oversight and transparency may lead to increased litigation and erode the social license required for long-term project success.
