Canada environmental groups warn of risks to orcas from new project laws

Canadian environmental groups are campaigning against proposed federal legislation intended to accelerate the development of major projects. Environmental Defence has launched an advertising campaign to highlight the potential risks to Southern Resident Orcas if the government proceeds with the planned changes to project review processes.

The proposed legislation includes the establishment of “economic zones” for energy production, telecommunications, and transportation corridors. These zones would grant the federal cabinet authority to determine permitted activities and allow ministers to pre-approve projects.

Additionally, the government has proposed transferring the responsibility for reviewing pipelines, transmission lines, and offshore renewable energy projects from the Impact Assessment Agency to the Canada Energy Regulator. While the government cites industry feedback regarding technical expertise as a reason for this shift, environmental and Indigenous groups have expressed significant concerns regarding species protections. The legislation is expected to be tabled during the fall sitting beginning September 21.
