Iran Conflict Fuels EV Sales Surge Across Europe, Canada, India

Rising oil prices after the Iran war have pushed fuel costs above $100 a barrel, prompting a sharp shift toward electric vehicles. In Europe, registrations of new EVs jumped 34 % year‑on‑year in April, with overall sales up about 30 % in 2025. Companies such as Volvo, Renault, Seat/Cupra and Chinese brands reported record order shares, and Octopus Electric Vehicles saw a 95 % increase in new‑EV demand. The trend spans markets that previously lagged, including Italy and the United Kingdom, where EVs accounted for roughly half of new registrations in April.

In Canada, March 2026 EV sales rose 83 % from the previous month and 75 % year‑on‑year, reaching 21,547 units – the strongest month since December 2024. The jump follows the reinstatement of a $5,000 federal rebate and a spike in fuel prices after the Hormuz strait closure, which lifted gasoline costs.

India’s market shows a parallel move toward electrified powertrains, with Toyota’s hybrid models hitting a 300,000‑unit milestone as buyers seek lower running costs amid higher fuel prices. In the Indian state of Odisha, EV registrations have surged to over nine lakh, but the rapid uptake is exposing a shortage of public charging stations, leaving many users reliant on home charging and limiting long‑distance travel.

The combined data illustrate how higher fuel prices are accelerating the transition to electric and hybrid vehicles worldwide, while also highlighting infrastructure challenges that could temper further growth.
