Canada expands affordable‑housing program with North Grenville partnership and new Whitby units

The federal Government of Canada is rolling out the Housing Design Catalogue, a library of more than 50 pre‑approved low‑rise housing plans intended to cut costs, speed approvals and double the rate of new construction. North Grenville has become the latest municipality to join as a Local Partner, agreeing to pre‑review designs and help streamline approvals for builders and homeowners.

In parallel, the federal and Ontario governments announced nearly C$2.9 million in funding for a redevelopment project in Whitby. The project will convert an aging two‑storey building into a three‑storey complex offering 30 affordable units – 14 at market‑rate affordability and 16 income‑based units for seniors, with 28 of the units fully accessible. Completion is targeted for spring 2027. Both initiatives are part of a broader effort by Canada Housing (Maisons Canada) to address the national housing crisis and reduce homelessness.
