Canada expands Arctic military presence with new bases
Canada is expanding its Arctic military presence through immediate operational support and long-term infrastructure projects. ATCO Frontec has completed a three-week deployment to establish a temporary base in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. This facility supports 350 Canadian Armed Forces personnel participating in Operation NANOOK-NUNAKPUT, an initiative aimed at strengthening northern surveillance, security, and readiness through September 25.
In a long-term strategic move, the Department of National Defence has announced plans for a $5 billion Royal Canadian Air Force forward operating location in Iqaluit. Construction is projected to take place between 2029 and 2040. The planned facility will include a longer runway, hangars, ammunition storage, fueling stations, and operation centers to support maritime patrol aircraft, search and rescue missions, and fighter jets. The Iqaluit project follows planned developments in Goose Bay, Yellowknife, and Inuvik.
