Canada expands robotic surgery with orthopedic and pediatric breakthroughs

Lakeridge Health launched Canada’s most advanced orthopedic robotic system, the Stryker 4.0 Orthopedic Robotics Platform, at Ajax Pickering Hospital in the Durham Region. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kaj Ravichandiran performed the nation’s first joint replacement using the robot, a project funded by a $2 million donation from the Jeremiah F. Coughlan Foundation.

In Toronto, the University Health Network partnered with The Hospital for Sick Children to offer adolescent patients robotic‑assisted pyeloplasty at Toronto General Hospital. The collaboration combines UHN’s robotic expertise with SickKids’ pediatric care, cutting surgery times from up to five hours to two hours and improving precision and recovery for young patients with kidney‑ureter blockages.

Both initiatives mark significant steps in expanding robot‑assisted surgery across Canada, bringing more precise, minimally invasive options to orthopedic and pediatric patients alike.
