Canada extends Ebola-related border and immigration measures

The Government of Canada has extended temporary border and immigration measures for another 30 days in response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These measures, now in effect until September 28, 2026, include entry bans for foreign nationals who have visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the previous 21 days.

Additionally, the suspension of immigration documents remains in place for residents of countries with high or very high Ebola risk, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. This suspension affects individuals who listed these countries as their last place of residence, meaning even those with previously approved visas or permits are unable to travel to Canada. While Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada continues to process applications, no new applications will be finalized while the measures are active.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents returning from affected regions are subject to health assessments upon arrival. Those without symptoms must undergo a 21-day quarantine, while those displaying symptoms will be isolated at a medical facility. The government has utilized expanded executive powers under Bill C-12 to manage these restrictions, which have previously impacted tens of thousands of permanent residence applications.
