Canada faces economic challenges from domestic policy and inflation

Canada faces significant economic challenges stemming from domestic policy issues, including rising debt, housing costs, and food inflation. According to Canada’s Food Price Report 2026, a family of four is expected to spend $17,571 on food this year, an increase of nearly $1,000 from the previous year. Food prices have risen 27 per cent over the last five years due to factors such as weather, wages, and transportation, though government policies also impact business costs.

Internal economic friction is exacerbated by persistent interprovincial trade barriers, including varying provincial rules and licensing requirements that hinder commerce within the country. Additionally, data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business indicates a significant disparity in employment growth; federal public service employment increased by 36 per cent between 2013 and 2023, while private-sector employment grew by 13 per cent during the same period.
