Canada fertility rate remains at all-time low

Statistics Canada reports that the country’s fertility rate in 2025 remained at an all-time low of 1.26 children per woman, a figure virtually unchanged from 2024. Canada currently ranks among the bottom seven of 20 high-income countries in terms of fertility rates.

The average age of mothers at childbirth has reached a new high of 31.9 years, continuing a decades-long upward trend from 26.7 years in 1976.

Additionally, the number of non-hospital births has returned to pre-pandemic levels. After peaking at over 9,000 in 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns, the number of women giving birth at home dropped to approximately 7,000 last year.
