Canada health ministers to meet over potential funding cliff
Canadian health ministers are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to address concerns regarding a potential “fiscal cliff” in healthcare funding. Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones stated that provincial and territorial leaders are seeking clarity on whether the federal government will continue its current level of support.
Provinces have expressed alarm over the federal budget, which indicates that several targeted funding streams will expire. Specifically, $4.8 billion allocated for home care, community care, and mental health and addiction services is set to end in 2027. Additionally, a $3 billion package for long-term care safety is scheduled to sunset in 2026, and $1.7 billion for personal support worker wages will conclude by 2028.
The federal government previously pledged $200 billion in health funding over ten years to modernize the system and reduce surgical backlogs. However, the Canada Health Transfer is projected to see a reduction in its growth rate after March 2028, shifting from a guaranteed minimum of five per cent to three per cent annually.
