Canada healthcare sector faces workforce transitions and labour shortages

Canada is facing evolving demands within its healthcare sector as the workforce approaches a period of significant transition. According to Statistics Canada, nearly one in five health workers were aged 55 or older in 2024, signaling a need to prepare the next generation of professionals as experienced staff retire.

The Government of Canada Job Bank indicates that several occupations, including healthcare aides, community services workers, and medical lab assistants, face a high risk of labour shortages over the next decade.

In response to staffing needs, institutions such as Yukon Hospitals are actively recruiting. Whitehorse General Hospital has issued a requisition for a full-time Registered Nurse for its operating room, offering a pay range between $49.73 and $66.42 per hour.
