Canada Liberals win three byelections amid RCMP investigation into B.C. Conservative leader

The Liberal Party has secured a significant victory in three Canadian federal byelections held on August 31, 2026. Braeden Caley won the North Vancouver-Capilano seat in British Columbia with 58.6 per cent of the vote. In Ontario, Tanveer Shahnawaz took Beaches-East York with 55.7 per cent, and Daniel Gobeil won Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec with 51.3 per cent. These wins bring the Liberal Party's total to 173 seats in the House of Commons.

Separately, the RCMP is investigating allegations involving British Columbia Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Delta South MLA Ian Paton has confirmed he is scheduled for an RCMP interview regarding claims that Findlay offered him a paid advisory position in exchange for his resignation. Paton alleges the offer included a salary of approximately $122,000. Findlay has dismissed the allegations as a 'political smear job,' maintaining that the discussions were ethical and legal.
