CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent reaches North Pole on Arctic mission

The CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, Canada’s largest and most powerful icebreaker, reached the North Pole on August 16 as part of its 2026 Arctic deployment. The mission is part of a multi-year effort running from 2024 to 2027 to support Natural Resources Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The vessel is collecting high-resolution geoscience and hydrographic data to assist Canada in defining the outer limits of its continental shelf. This work is conducted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which provides the legal framework for establishing rights over seabed resources beyond exclusive economic zones.

This deployment aims to reinforce Canada’s sovereignty and security in the Arctic amid increasing geopolitical competition and changing sea-ice conditions that are making the region more accessible to shipping and other activities.
