Canada imposes new sanctions on Iranian officials and entities
Canada has announced a new round of sanctions targeting five senior Iranian security and government officials, as well as five state-run entities. The measures were introduced by Global Affairs Canada in response to the Iranian regime’s role in the repression of its population.
According to the Canadian government, the sanctioned individuals and organizations have contributed to the suppression of dissent and the restriction of fundamental freedoms. Specific accusations include involvement in digital surveillance, censorship, arbitrary detention, intimidation, and unlawful violence.
The announcement follows a period of significant unrest in Iran, where protests initially sparked by living costs evolved into anti-government demonstrations. While Iranian authorities reported over 3,000 deaths during the unrest, international rights groups have suggested the death toll may be higher.
This latest action is part of a broader history of Canadian sanctions against Iran. Since 2002, Canada has implemented 24 rounds of sanctions affecting 237 individuals and 265 entities.
