Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion of U.S. goods FAST-MOVING

Canada has announced a series of retaliatory tariffs on approximately 700 U.S. products, valued at roughly 27.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 20 billion USD), in response to recent U.S. trade actions. The new duties, which range from 15% to 50%, are scheduled to take effect on September 8. Targeted sectors include steel, aluminum, dairy, electronics, agricultural equipment, and household appliances.

The escalation follows the breakdown of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington. This comes after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian imports, including wine, cement, plywood, and clothing. In response to the economic tension, the Canadian government has allocated 7.5 billion Canadian dollars to support business liquidity and unemployment subsidies for affected workers.

Further tensions are expected as President Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on all Canadian automobiles, trucks, parts, and steel to 50% starting January 1, 2027. The dispute has significant implications for North American supply chains, particularly in the automotive and steel industries, and has prompted concerns regarding broader economic stability between the two nations.
