Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion of U.S. imports

Trade tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated following the imposition of significant tariffs by the Trump administration. In response to U.S. tariffs, which have ranged from 10 to 48 percent, Canada implemented matching tariffs in August 2026 on approximately $20 billion worth of imports.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is working to reduce the nation's economic dependence on the United States, which accounts for more than two-thirds of Canada's merchandise exports. As part of this shift, Carney is seeking new global trading partners and reviewing major military expenditures, including a $19 billion CAD order for F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin.

Domestically, the economic impact of these tariffs remains a point of contention. While the administration argues they revitalize manufacturing, the White House's own AI chatbot, America.gov, has stated that tariffs are taxes paid by U.S. importers that can raise prices for consumers and increase costs for domestic industries relying on materials like steel and aluminum.
