Canada Infrastructure Bank funds Inuit-led wind project in Nunavut
The Canada Infrastructure Bank has finalized a $20 million loan for an Inuit-led wind energy project in Nunavut. The initiative is a partnership between the Kitikmeot Inuit Association and Tugliq Energy, designed to serve Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd.’s Hope Bay gold mine site.
The project’s first phase involves the installation of a 4.2-megawatt wind turbine and a four-megawatt battery energy storage system. Located approximately 125 kilometers southwest of Cambridge Bay, the system is expected to provide 20 percent of the mine’s energy needs during high-wind periods. This transition aims to reduce annual diesel consumption by up to three million litres and lower emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes per year.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project is expected to create employment opportunities for Inuit and provide long-term economic impacts through profit-sharing. Natural Resources Canada has previously contributed $25 million to the Hope Bay project through its Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways program. Agnico Eagle has indicated plans to potentially build four additional turbines following the results of this initial phase.
