Canada asserts new diplomatic role at United Nations General Assembly

At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has adopted a prominent role, advocating for 'middle powers' to unite and preserve the international order amidst shifting global dynamics. Carney has emphasized a policy of 'values-based realism' and has demonstrated a willingness to challenge U.S. trade demands and tariffs.

During high-level UN meetings, Carney, alongside leaders from France, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom, called for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to ensure lasting peace. This follows Canada's formal recognition of the State of Palestine in 2025.

On the economic front, the inaugural Canada Investment Summit recently concluded, reportedly drawing nearly $500 billion in investment and financing commitments from various global institutions and banks. This includes significant interest in sectors such as AI infrastructure. Additionally, trade tensions remain a factor as U.S. President Donald Trump indicated the United States would continue purchasing Canadian potash, despite exploring cheaper alternatives from Belarus.
