Canada invests $840K in employment training for vision loss support
The Government of Canada has announced an investment of more than $840,000 to provide employment training and support for British Columbians who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision.
Delivered by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), the Project Based Labour Market Training (PBLMT) initiative will operate in Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, and New Westminster. The program is designed to help participants gain essential skills, occupational development, and workplace experience.
The training structure includes 11 weeks of employability skills training, five weeks of occupational skills training, 13 weeks of on-the-job work experience with local employers, and four weeks of follow-up support to assist with job retention.
According to CNIB’s BC-Yukon executive director Ana Booth, nearly 250,000 people in British Columbia are impacted by sight loss, yet only two in five are currently employed. Officials noted that barriers such as inaccessible employment, gaps in assistive technology, and skill gaps contribute to this disparity.
