Canada invests in British Columbia rural transit and rail projects
The Canadian federal government is investing over $10.6 million into rural and remote transit projects across British Columbia. This funding aims to expand on-demand and fixed-route services for 12 additional communities, including the Bridge River Indian Band and the Nisga’a Lisims Government, which will receive support for infrastructure such as maintenance garages and charging stations.
In the Village of Pemberton, the investment will fund a multi-modal transit hub featuring a station, bus shelters, sidewalks, bike racks, and future EV charging capabilities. This hub is intended to improve mobility for surrounding areas, including the Líl̓wat Nation, Whistler, and Squamish.
Additionally, a $500,000 federal contribution, alongside provincial and regional funding, is being directed toward feasibility studies to potentially revive passenger rail services along the Victoria-Langford corridor on Vancouver Island. The corridor has been dormant since 2011, and the new funds will support technical assessments of track integrity and station locations to address regional congestion.
