Canada invests in infrastructure and modern construction methods
The Canadian government and the City of Winnipeg are investing over $69 million into the Rutland Trunk Sewer project. The federal government is providing up to $27.1 million through the Canada Build Communities Strong Fund, while Winnipeg contributes approximately $42.2 million. The project involves constructing 2.0 kilometres of land drainage trunk sewer in the Ferry Road combined sewer district to expand drainage capacity, support sewer separation, and mitigate basement flooding risks. It also aims to reduce combined sewer overflow volumes into the Red River and Assiniboine River to protect Lake Winnipeg’s water quality.
Separately, Canadian officials are addressing challenges in the housing sector by promoting modern methods of construction (MMC), such as modular, panelization, and prefabrication. Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson emphasized the need for code harmonization and improved supply chains to utilize Canadian wood products more effectively. Industry leaders noted that government procurement methods must evolve to accommodate MMC and mass timber to increase the pace and affordability of home construction.
