Canada Secures Full EBU Membership, Gains Eurovision Eligibility

CBC/Radio-Canada was approved as a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) at the organisation’s 96th General Assembly in Prague, ending a 76‑year period as an associate member. Full membership gives the Canadian public broadcaster access to EBU networks for journalism, verification, digital news and the Eurovision News and Euroradio Music Exchanges.

The new status makes Canada eligible to submit an entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, although the broadcaster has not yet confirmed whether it will participate. A CBC spokesperson said, “We’ll have more to say about the Eurovision Song Contest later.” The eligibility could allow a debut as early as the 2027 edition.

The move follows the Canadian government’s cultural‑diplomacy push, noted in the 2025 federal budget and backed by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Canada would join a small group of non‑European participants such as Israel, Australia and Morocco, extending the contest’s global reach.
