Canada labour market loses 42,000 jobs in August

Canada’s labour market experienced a setback in August, with the economy losing 42,000 jobs. This loss partially reverses the 181,000 positions gained between April and July, leaving year-to-date job growth at 27,000.

Economists suggest the decline may be due to structural shifts, such as an aging population increasing retirement rates and a slowing pace of immigration. While the headline job loss was disappointing, the unemployment rate remained steady at 6.4%, which analysts view as a more reliable indicator of cyclical health.

Sector-specific data shows the public sector shed 20,000 positions, while business, building, and support services also saw declines. Conversely, the manufacturing sector showed resilience, adding 22,000 jobs despite the impact of recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Analysts note that the full impact of the new U.S. tariffs may not be reflected in this month's data due to the timing of the surveys.
