Canada launches C$70 billion clean energy project in Labrador

Canada has announced a massive clean energy initiative involving nearly C$70 billion (USD$50.5 billion) in hydroelectric, wind, and transmission development. The federal government will provide up to C$10 billion in financial support for the project, which officials describe as the largest clean energy investment in North American history.

The agreement between the federal government, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador focuses on expanding renewable capacity in Labrador. Key components include upgrading the Churchill Falls hydroelectric complex to add capacity, developing the proposed 2,700 MW Gull Island hydro project, and implementing 2,000 MW of wind power. These efforts aim to create 14,000 MW of renewable generating capacity, sufficient to power approximately 10 million homes.

The project is expected to create an estimated 23,000 construction jobs and contribute $31 billion to the Canadian GDP through the early 2040s. It also involves building new high-voltage transmission corridors to integrate the electricity systems of Quebec and Labrador, supporting Canada’s National Electricity Strategy to double grid capacity by 2050.
