Canada launches digital library for critical mineral drill core samples

The Canadian government has launched the Canadian Digital Core Library (CDCL), a new digital platform designed to convert drill core samples into digital records. The initiative aims to use scanning technology and artificial intelligence to reduce exploration risks and accelerate the development of critical mineral projects.

The first drill core samples, sourced from the Northwest Territories, were scanned on September 14 in Calgary. This initial phase is intended to strengthen domestic critical mineral supply chains and attract investment by providing explorers with accessible, high-resolution geological data.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) plans to invest $40 million over two years into the library, with funding starting in the 2026-27 period. The project will establish national drill-core-data connectivity and support provincial and territorial digitization efforts to build a scalable foundation for future resource exploration.
