Canada launches recruitment drive for US scientists

Canada is actively recruiting American scientists as researchers increasingly relocate to Canadian institutions. This trend follows concerns regarding academic freedom and funding restrictions in the United States, particularly in fields such as climate science and vaccine research under the Trump administration.

Epidemiologist Sheryl Magzamen, who moved from the University of Colorado to the University of Montreal, cited grant withdrawals and a decline in academic freedom as primary drivers for her relocation. Canadian institutions, including the University Health Network, have expressed interest in attracting foreign experts to bolster research capabilities.

To support these efforts, Canada has launched a CAN$1.7 billion (US$1.23 billion) 12-year program aimed at recruiting researchers globally, with the United States identified as a primary target. Industry Minister Melanie Joly stated that while other nations may be cutting research, Canada is “doubling down on science and we’re doubling down on research.”
