Canada recruits 64 researchers, including 48 from U.S. institutions
Canada is aggressively recruiting top-tier scientific talent through the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada program, a component of the $1.7 billion Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative. In the program's first phase, 64 researchers have been recruited to various Canadian universities, including the University of British Columbia, McGill, and the University of Toronto.
Notably, 48 of these 64 scholars are being recruited from prestigious United States institutions such as Harvard, MIT, and Yale. This movement of intellectual capital comes amid reported tensions in American academia following policies from the Trump administration regarding research funding and academic freedom.
The federal government is providing $504 million over eight years to support this initial cohort. An additional $37 million has been allocated to recruit 63 emerging leaders over the coming year. Individual appointments include Dr. Chris Todd Hittinger at the University of Guelph to study biotechnology, Gabriel Walton at Queen's University to study slope hazards, and Phillip Zamore at McGill University specializing in RNA therapeutics.
