India and Canada advance CEPA trade negotiations ahead of PM Modi's visit

India and Canada are accelerating negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with officials aiming to finalize the pact by November. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K. Patnaik stated that the fourth round of talks has concluded and expressed hope that the agreement could be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Canada in December 2026.

The proposed CEPA seeks to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers, facilitate the movement of goods and capital, and expand trade in services. Key sectors for cooperation include energy, critical minerals, aerospace, defense, and agriculture. The agreement is part of a broader effort to double bilateral trade between the two nations by 2030.

In support of these economic ties, a 300-member Canadian trade mission is currently visiting India. Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have reaffirmed their commitment to building on recent positive momentum in bilateral relations, focusing on trade, technology, and security.
