Canada matches Red Cross donations for Manitoba flood recovery
The Canadian federal government has announced it will match eligible donations made to the Canadian Red Cross 2026 flood appeal for Manitoba. This initiative follows a decision by the Manitoba provincial government to match donations dollar-for-dollar.
The funding is intended to support recovery efforts in the Parkland Region of Manitoba, which suffered extensive damage from severe storms and heavy rainfall between June and July. The flooding caused evacuations and damaged homes, farms, businesses, healthcare facilities, and critical infrastructure, including approximately 1,300 kilometers of roads.
Emergency Management and Community Resilience Minister Eleanor Olszewski stated that the federal matching will be retroactive to the launch of the appeal. The funds will be administered by the Red Cross and are intended to cover needs that may fall outside traditional government disaster financial assistance programs, such as business support and future mitigation work.
