Canada Nickel Company’s Crawford Nickel Project Secures Federal Decision Statement

On 31 July 2026, Canadian Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature Julie Dabrusin issued a positive Decision Statement for the Crawford Nickel Project, clearing a central federal review and moving the project into its final phase. The approval allows Canada Nickel Company Inc. to advance the mine in the Timmins district of Ontario, which is planned to become the largest nickel‑sulphide operation in the western world and North America’s only primary source of chromium. The project is expected to process up to 240,000 metric tons of ore per day and operate for more than 40 years, creating thousands of jobs for nearby First Nations such as the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, which has invested $20 million. The development includes a carbon‑capture system that could permanently store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually. Federal conditions require protection of Indigenous communities, fish habitats and migratory birds. Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson said, “The Crawford Nickel Project is an example of Canada’s global critical minerals leadership, and today’s approval is a testament to our government’s commitment to responsible permitting and environmental standards.”
