Canada Nickel receives federal approval for Crawford nickel project in Ontario

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has been granted a positive decision statement from Canada’s Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature for its Crawford nickel project in Ontario. The approval is the first mining permit issued under the amended Impact Assessment Act since 2019, setting a precedent for large‑scale resource projects.

CEO Mark Selby said the decision “recognises the strategic importance of responsibly developing Canada’s critical mineral resources in partnership with all levels of government and Indigenous Nations, while maintaining rigorous environmental standards.” The company highlighted that Crawford is expected to become the Western world’s largest nickel‑sulphide operation and North America’s only primary source of chromium, metals essential for defence, aerospace, electric‑vehicle batteries and other advanced manufacturing.

An independent economic analysis estimates the project will contribute about $70 billion to Canada’s GDP over its life, support roughly 185 000 person‑years of employment and generate long‑term economic activity across Northern Ontario. Canada Nickel plans to advance detailed engineering, financing and remaining permits ahead of a construction decision targeted for 2027.
