Canada Nickel's Crawford Project Secures First Federal Mining Approval Under New Impact Assessment Act

Canada Nickel Company Inc. received a positive Decision Statement from the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature, marking the first mining approval issued under Canada’s amended Impact Assessment Act (2019). The Crawford nickel project in the Timmins district is expected to contribute roughly $70 billion to Canada’s GDP and support about 185,000 person‑years of employment over its life.

The approval also highlights Indigenous partnerships: the Taykwa Tagamou Nation has invested $20 million in equity, and a contract for infrastructure services has been signed with a member of the Wabun Tribal Council. With federal clearance, Canada Nickel will move to detailed engineering, project financing and the remaining permits, aiming for a construction decision by 2027. The decision sets a precedent for how large natural‑resource projects navigate Canada’s modern environmental assessment process.
