Canada observes Islamic and Latin American Heritage Months in October

October marks the observance of both Islamic Heritage Month and Latin American Heritage Month in Canada.

In the Waterloo Region District School Board, Islamic Heritage Month is being recognized with the 2026 theme ‘The Art and Legacy of Islamic Calligraphy.’ This theme, selected by Islamic History Month Canada, focuses on the historical and spiritual significance of calligraphy. The board aims to use the month to foster safer learning environments and combat Islamophobia by integrating Muslim identities and stories into the curriculum.

Simultaneously, October is recognized across Ontario and Canada as Latin American Heritage Month. This designation, made nationally by the Government of Canada in 2018, celebrates the contributions of Latin American communities. In Ontario, more than 400,000 residents of Hispanic and Latin origin represent one of the province’s fastest-growing populations, with roots in 23 different countries.
