Canada prepares for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Communities across Canada are preparing to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 30. These observances aim to honor residential school survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous families.

Various local events are scheduled to facilitate reflection and education. In British Columbia, the Tseshaht nation is hosting a walk starting at the Maht Mahs Gym, while the Vancouver Aquarium and Langley are organizing community gatherings featuring drumming, storytelling, and candlelight walks. In Alberta, institutions like the Alberta University of the Arts and various community centers in Red Deer and Vernon are hosting ceremonies, markets, and educational programs.

The day serves as a period for public commemoration of the history of cultural genocide and the ongoing process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
