Canada observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in Canada, an initiative aimed at promoting inclusive workplaces and highlighting the value of diverse abilities in the workforce.

In Campbell River, the North Island Employment Foundations Society (NIEFS) and Rivercity Inclusion held an event to celebrate local employers who support inclusive hiring. Participants highlighted the importance of customized employment, where job coaching matches specific skills with employer needs. One participant, Lian Paterson, noted that structured environments and routine help individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities thrive, while advocating against outdated “high functioning” or “low functioning” labels.

In the Comox Valley, the “Light It Up! For NDEAM” campaign is set for October 15. This nationwide movement encourages businesses and landmarks to use blue and purple lighting to raise awareness. Data cited from the University of British Columbia indicates that the employee retention rate for people with disabilities is 93 per cent, which is three to five per cent higher than the general workforce average.
