Canada opens online passport renewal for all adults

The Government of Canada announced that online passport renewal is now available to every eligible adult citizen. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab said the change removes previous limits, allowing applicants to complete the entire process – application, photo upload and payment – digitally, without mailing documents or visiting a Service Canada centre.

The expansion aims to simplify service for Canadians living in remote or rural areas and for those with mobility challenges, while keeping in‑person and mail‑in options for those who prefer them. The government also highlighted its passport service guarantee, promising processing within 30 business days (or free if the deadline is missed) and a typical online‑renewal turnaround of about 20 business days.
