Canada selects German TKMS 212CD submarines for naval modernization

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at the July 2026 NATO summit in Ankara that Canada has chosen Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) as the primary supplier of 12 new Type 212CD diesel‑electric submarines. The 212CD model features air‑independent propulsion, stealth hull design and Arctic‑optimized capabilities, and is slated to replace the aging Victoria‑class fleet, with the first four vessels expected to enter service by 2034.

The contract underscores Canada’s commitment to NATO interoperability and a strategic focus on Atlantic and Arctic security, marking a shift from earlier considerations of a South‑Korean design intended for Indo‑Pacific operations. Analysts note that the decision signals a re‑orientation toward European‑centric defence priorities and may limit Canada’s ability to project submarine presence in the Pacific region.

The procurement, valued in the billions, also includes training, logistical support and integration with existing naval platforms, bolstering Canada’s maritime deterrence against Russian activity in the North Atlantic and Arctic waters.
