Canada outlines PR travel guidelines and key spousal sponsorship refusal reasons

Applicants for Canadian permanent residency may travel outside Canada while their application is being processed. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires a valid Permanent Resident Card for re‑entry on commercial transport; if the card is not yet issued, a Permanent Resident Travel Document must be obtained. The applicant’s existing work permit, study permit or visitor visa generally allows re‑entry, and the processing of the PR application continues abroad.

For spousal sponsorship, IRCC identifies the most common grounds for refusal: insufficient proof that the relationship is genuine, and incomplete or incorrect application forms. Officers look for detailed evidence such as communication logs, shared finances, joint leases, photographs and consistent documentation. Inaccuracies or gaps in dates, addresses, or relationship details can trigger a refusal, emphasizing the need for thorough and accurate submissions.
