Canada PM Mark Carney announces trade diversification and joint US 250th anniversary celebration

Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a multibillion‑dollar investment plan aimed at diversifying Canada’s trade away from the United States. The package includes a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Coast, expansions of Vancouver and Prince Rupert ports, and five liquefied natural gas terminals on British Columbia’s North Coast. The revised pipeline route will exit near Vancouver to avoid resistance from coastal First Nations and a pending tanker moratorium.

In tandem with the economic announcements, Canada is joining the United States in commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Canadian embassy in Washington will be illuminated, Niagara Falls will glow in red, white and blue, and Canadian naval vessels will sail with the US fleet in the Sail250 event. Canada will also plant 250 maple trees across the United States as a lasting symbol of the partnership.
