Canadian PM Mark Carney visits Paris and Dublin before G7 summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney began a six‑day European tour in Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron to signal the hand‑over of the G7 presidency to France and to discuss cooperation on trade, climate and digital policy. He then travelled to Dublin, holding bilateral talks with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and President Catherine Connolly, and visited County Mayo, a region tied to his family heritage. The meetings focused on expanding cooperation in agri‑food, AI, pharmaceuticals and climate action, and on accelerating ratification of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the EU.

Carney’s itinerary also included a video conference with the other G7 leaders and China on global economic imbalances, and a virtual gathering of Canadian premiers ahead of the July 1 review of the Canada‑U.S‑Mexico trade agreement (CUSMA). The premiers discussed trade certainty, the national electricity strategy to double power generation by 2050, and First Nations priorities. The tour underscores Canada’s effort to diversify trade away from the United States and to strengthen its role in the G7 and broader international partnerships.
