Canada Post expands weekend delivery and phases out door-to-door service
Canada Post has initiated weekend parcel delivery in Ottawa and Montreal, with plans to expand to Toronto in late November 2026. The corporation intends to bring weekend service to Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary next year, aiming to reach seven million households by the end of 2027.
Simultaneously, the postal service is transitioning approximately four million addresses from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes. A new online tool allows customers to check when their area might be affected. In Montreal, eastern neighborhoods such as Anjou and Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles could see changes as early as 2028, while other areas may transition between 2030 and 2031.
Financially, Canada Post reported a pre-tax loss of $482 million in the first half of 2026, though second-quarter losses decreased compared to the previous year as parcel revenue rose by 20.7 per cent. Chief Executive Doug Ettinger noted that while the corporation is seeing early signs of financial recovery, it still relies on federal loans and plans to scale back its urban post office network to reduce government dependency.
