Canada rallies behind PM Carney amid U.S. trade war

Canada has demonstrated political, social, and union unity behind Prime Minister Mark Carney following the collapse of trade negotiations with the United States. Carney rejected a proposed deal, stating it would have threatened Canadian sovereignty, restricted the nation's ability to negotiate independent treaties, and harmed strategic sectors such as the automotive industry.

Support for the Prime Minister's stance has come from various sectors, including national media, provincial premiers, and labor organizations. Notably, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called for national unity, stating Canada could not accept ‘a bad deal.’ Unifor, Canada's largest private-sector union, also backed the decision to walk away from the negotiating table.

The trade tension follows the implementation of 50% U.S. tariffs on approximately 28 billion Canadian dollars worth of exports, primarily manufactured goods. While Alberta Premier Danielle Smith supported ending negotiations, she expressed reservations regarding Canada's retaliatory tariff response. Ottawa has announced plans for dollar-for-dollar retaliation.
