Canada reaches World Cup last‑16 after 1‑0 win over South Africa

Canada's national team advanced to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating South Africa 1‑0 in the round of 16. The match was played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and the decisive goal came from midfielder Stephen Eustáquio in added time (minute 90+2).

Alphonso Davies, returning from a previous hamstring injury, entered the second half and later praised the victory, saying “El final fue increíble”. Coach Jesse Marsch made tactical changes that helped the Canadians hold off the Bafana Bafana until the late winner. The result marks Canada’s first ever progression to the World Cup round of 16. The team will meet the winner of the Netherlands–Morocco quarter‑final tie in the next round.

South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made several key saves, but the late goal ended their tournament, concluding a respectable debut in the knockout phase.
