Canada braces for US 50% tariff threat as trade talks intensify
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that, beginning August 19, the United States will impose 50 percent tariffs on a broad range of Canadian goods. The administration says the measures target provincial alcohol restrictions, Canada’s dairy supply‑management system and certain automotive quota disputes, and they will not exempt products that meet the Canada‑United States‑Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the negotiations “nasty” but affirmed that Canada remains engaged. He said the talks are essential to protect Canadian jobs and businesses. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette have been meeting U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington to advance the discussions. Canada is also weighing export quotas on steel and aluminum as a possible response.
Economist Trevor Tombe estimated that 13.7 percent of British Columbia’s U.S.–bound exports would be hit, a higher share than in Quebec, Ontario or Alberta. A KPMG survey of Canadian business leaders showed 51 percent expect to benefit from the federal economic agenda but want faster policy action as the tariff threat looms.
