Canada receives first F-35 jets amid procurement review

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has received its first two Lockheed Martin CF-35A Lightning II fighter jets. The aircraft were delivered on October 22 at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, where they will remain to support initial training for Canadian pilots and technicians.

Despite this delivery, Prime Minister Mark Carney has paused the planned order of 88 stealth fighter jets. The government is currently conducting a defense purchase review, which was originally scheduled to conclude a year ago. This review was initiated following trade and annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. As a result of the ongoing evaluation, Canada may opt for a mixed fleet that includes Saab Gripen jets.

The first aircraft are expected to arrive in Canada in 2028, with initial operational capacity projected for 2029–2030. Infrastructure preparations are already underway at 3 Wing Bagotville in Quebec and 4 Wing Cold Lake in Alberta to support future operations.
