Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion of U.S. goods
Canada has announced a series of retaliatory tariffs against the United States in response to American duties on Canadian goods. The new measures, which will take effect on September 8, will target approximately $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports across roughly 700 product categories.
The tariff structure is tiered at 15%, 25%, and 50%. High-impact sectors such as steel and aluminum are expected to face the maximum 50% rate. Other targeted goods include dairy, seafood, appliances, and electronics. This move follows the U.S. decision to impose 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian products.
Prime Minister Mark Carney recently ordered negotiators to walk away from a trade agreement with the Trump administration, citing unsustainable and unfair terms. To mitigate the economic impact of this escalating trade conflict, the Canadian government is launching a $7.5 billion economic support plan aimed at assisting small and medium-sized businesses and workers affected by the trade barriers.
Relations between the two nations have become increasingly strained, with tensions extending beyond economics. Donald Trump has suggested renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' as a response to the trade dispute.
