Canada seeks to reduce Starlink dependence as Amazon Leo shows high speeds

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed intentions to reduce Canada’s reliance on Elon Musk’s Starlink for satellite internet services. In an interview with the New York Times, Carney stated that the government aims to diversify its strategic telecommunications and defense providers to protect national interests and prepare for various crisis scenarios, including the improbable risk of military conflict with the United States.

Simultaneously, Amazon’s Leo satellite constellation is emerging as a potential competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink. Recent tests conducted by the U.S. Army’s DEVCOM C5ISR Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground demonstrated that Amazon’s Leo Pro antenna achieved download speeds exceeding 400 Mbps. While these tests were conducted on a fresh network without heavy user load, the results suggest the technology is capable of meeting or exceeding technical promises, providing a viable alternative for both consumer and enterprise markets.
