Canada seeks to reduce technological dependence on US defense systems
Following reports of Starlink satellite connections being interrupted during missile strikes in Kyiv, Canadian officials are highlighting the strategic vulnerabilities of relying on American technology. While Washington has denied claims that the White House ordered the cutoff of Starshield access, the incident has underscored the risks of technological dependency for allied nations.
In response, the government under Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the need to diversify defense capabilities. Canada has awarded a military contract to Telesat for secure satellite communications in the Arctic and is working to consolidate domestic artificial intelligence technologies into a specialized military 'AI stack'.
Despite these initiatives, the transition remains gradual. Recent data shows the Department of National Defence has paid approximately $68 million to major US firms, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, and their Canadian subsidiaries, since the beginning of the year.
