Canada seeks trade diversification amid shifting U.S. relations

The relationship between Canada and the United States is undergoing significant shifts driven by political tensions and evolving trade strategies. Following the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency in January 2025, Canada has experienced increased trade disputes and political friction. Research indicates a rise in hostility, with 48 per cent of Canadians reporting an unfavourable view of Americans, viewing the U.S. variously as a potential threat or an enemy.

In response to these changing dynamics, Canada is seeking to reduce its traditional economic dependence on the American market by investing in alternative infrastructure and global trade routes. A key development in this shift is the emergence of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). Formed through a 2023 merger, this integrated railroad network spans approximately 20,000 miles, connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico under a single system. This corridor provides Canadian producers with direct access to Mexican markets and offers Mexican exporters routes to Canadian ports, creating strategic alternatives within the North American freight system.
